This article seeks to analyze how the ruling «political families» which alternated in power contributed to the process of Spain’s modernization during and after the transition to democracy. The author studies changes in such characteristics of the ruling elite as gender, age, level of education and professionalism, as well as the ways to form governments and other institutions of power.
