The paper analyses the phenomenon of the «Islamic State» (IS) as a challenge to the Western model of social order, an alternative project of state-making, a clash within the Islamic world and a new stage of anti-westernization. The paper also scrutinizes the success and competitive advantages of the IS in filling the vacuum of power and making its own protostate as a consequences of the both degrading state institutions in the region and unfinished nation-making projects.
