The article provides an overview of the Japanese trade policy in Asia Pacific as well as specifies key interest groups and their capacity to influence the Japanese politics. To reveal the prerequisites for various interest groups to form coalitions, the author sticks to the international political economy theory. The author pays particular attention to the interest groups competing for shaping Japan’s trade policy and to the mechanisms which the authorities employ to eliminate controversies.
