The article explores the causes of burdensharing among the members of the North Atlantic Alliance, as well as the dynamics of the transatlantic debate on individual member contributions in order to meet NATO collective defense needs. The authors provide a chronological approach to the burden-sharing problem which is complimented with an analysis of its contemporary state. At the same time, the authors focus on the financial component associated with the size of the US and European NATO members’ allocations to defense.
