Abstract

The role and place of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the political life of Romania, as well as its evolution and the principles of the political program are analyzed using extensive concrete material. It is noted that the SDP has moved from being left-wing to centrist. Much attention is paid to the competition between the social democratic and liberal parties after 2014. The flexible tactics of the SDP led to the establishment of a very stable and successful structure, influencing the entire configuration of the Romanian political system, despite corruption scandals that led to mass protests in 2017–2018. At the same time, the development of the liberal sector of the Romanian political system experienced many painful and crisis moments. However, the history, doctrine and methods of political struggle of contemporary Romanian social democracy confirm the observation that the division into right and left in Romania is relativly contingent. When analyzing the period of 2014–2022, the difficult relationship between the liberal President K. Iohannis, on the one hand, and the government and parliament, where the Social Democrats continued to play a significant role, on the other, is of particular interest. This conflict is the core of the political clashes of this period.
