Abstract

The article is devoted to the conflictogenic aspect of the integration of foreign cultural diasporas into the socio-political structure of European states. The paper analyzes the processes of diaspora mobilization, through which diasporas have become important actors in international relations. The paper highlights the role of contextual factors such as globalization, modernization, economic inequality, territorial conquest and community humiliation as causes of outbreaks of political activism. The paper shows different interpretations of the concept of diasporas in the academic community and highlights the peculiarities of their conflict potential. It has been shown that when diasporas are empowered enough to advance their interests, they are more likely to use generally moderate means to achieve their goals. If, however, they feel disempowered and deprived, they resort to transgressive methods: their mobilization begins. A definition of diaspora mobilization is given. The paper shows examples of diaspora transnationalism, identifies cases of diaspora governance by the states of origin, including for the purpose of promoting their interests abroad. The auther theorises about spatialities and temporalities of diaspora engagement. The article distinguishes between сritical junctures and transformative events in the life of diasporas that change the trajectory of their mobilizations. The question is raised about the consequences of diaspora mobilizations, which, if diaspora interests are taken into account, can lead both to the harmonization of inter-ethnic and inter-confessional relations and successful integration of diasporas, and to the destabilization of these relations.
