Abstract

The article considers the four basic foreign policy concepts that historically determine US policy. The analysis is based on the taxonomy of four schools of thought of American academic W.R. Mead. If Hamiltonianism and Wilsonianism are variants of conservative and liberal internationalism, then Jacksonianism and Jeffersonianism are forms of conservative and liberal nationalism. The author explains in detail how the new American Renaissance influenced and changed the foundations of globalist Hamiltonian and Wilsonian traditions. Special attention is paid to the transformation of Wilsonianism with the accent on liberal institutionalism and neo-conservatism. A detailed analysis of two other concepts is provided. Jeffersonians defend minimalist foreign policy agenda and avoid interventions abroad, while Jacksonians show populist nationalism, directed mostly inside. All four concepts in their interpretation of key values and principles of foreign and domestic policy, as well as their advantages and disadvantages are scrutinized in detail. The author concludes that, depending on the conditions, the American establishment is constantly looking for new approaches and combinations. It is assumed that today's Renaissance of the Jacksonian concept means an exam for globalization and retreat from its promotion. D. Trump reacts to the changes in American political sphere and intends to revise the Wilsonian baggage inherited from B. Obama.
