The article considers the policy of France towards African countries, first of all – its former colonies in the Western part of the continent. Particular attention is paid to the shaping and evolution of «special relationship» between French and African elites. Moreover, the role of France in armed conflicts within this region – military coups, civil wars, clashes, linked to invasions from outside – is analysed. In the last part, changes in the abovementioned policy caused by the situation in African states connected with the end of the «cold war» as well as the EU’s support of France in conflicts resolution are examined.
