This paper reviews the impact of the fifth and the sixth EU enlargements on the evolution of the immigration situation in Italy. The legislation on the entrance and residence of the EU citizens in the Italian Peninsula as well as restrictive norms for labour immigration from Central and Eastern Europe are analyzed. Some statistical data on the dynamics, characteristics and direction of the migration flows is provided. Special attention is paid to the attitude of the Italian society and political elite towards the process.
