The paper looks at recent research dealing with foreign fighters who pose a potential long-term threat not only in combat zones but also in their home countries. It is specially noted, that imminent danger is the possibility of some individuals of the Muslim diaspora in Europe becoming vulnerable to radicalisation and being specifically targeted by Islamic extremist recruiters. Much attention is given to the returning fighters (returnees), especially Western jihadists. The article shows repressive measures but outlines the benefits of deradicalization and rehabilitation programmes in this particular foreign fighter context.
