Abstract

On April 25th, 1974, the Portuguese «Carnation revolution» ended one of the longest dictatorships in Southern Europe (Estado Novo). During the last thirty-nine years, the political and cultural memories of the opposition and resistance to «Estado Novo» have played an important role in Portuguese politics, namely in left wing parties and sociopolitical movements. This article examines the renewed importance and significance of this historical memory, in the context of severe socio-economic crisis, focusing on the most recent forms of political protest and social mobilization that closely relate to it.
