The article addresses geostrategic and political grounds for NATO enlargement. It gives a detailed overview of the East European rounds of enlargement in 1999 and 2004. Prospects for further enlargement of the Alliance are considered. NATO’s relations with the Russian Federation ane being analyzed among other issues.
