The article investigates the contest for influence in the Balkans between the West and Russia, including related to a new stage of NATO's expansion. Political processes in the Balkan countries are considered through the prism of public opinion. The author concludes that the geopolitical rivalry in the region will periodically give rise to manageable conflicts.
