Abstract

First part of the article examines the results of the elections to the European Parliament (EP) in the Republic of Poland (RP), which took place on June 9, 2024, and compares them with the results of the previous EP elections. Second part is devoted to the analysis of Polish Eurosceptic sentiments, as well as negative sentiments towards Russia. The author believes that Eurosceptic sentiments are characteristic of both leading Polish parties – Law and Justice and Civic Platform; in their political struggle, both parties actively speculate about «Russian influence», trying to denigrate each other. Third part examines new migration strategy of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, which included a decision to temporarily suspend the right to asylum. Fourth part briefly examines two topics related to budgetary issues: the EU’s decision to apply the Excessive Deficit Procedure (EDP) to Poland and the appointment of Piotr Serafin as EU Budget Commissioner. The article also touches upon issues related to the consequences of the floods that occurred in September 2024 in a number of European countries, including Poland. Global climate change increases the likelihood of such disasters recurring, sometimes directly influencing the course of political processes. The author concludes that the active political struggle between the Civic Platform and Law and Justice complicates the implementation of a coordinated domestic political course for the Republic of Poland and weakens its position on international arena. National interests of Poland and its political elites often run counter to the EU’s ideas on the development of European states.
